Co-trainer David Hayes has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by Kiwi import Rising Romance this season, and has revealed the mare will likely have a final start in Saturday’s 2015 Zipping Classic (2400m) at Sandown before a trip abroad.
Posting five wins and a further nine minors through 23 career starts so far, Rising Romance began her racing tenure under the guidance of Donna Logan; initially announcing herself to the Australian racing community when fourth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) before taking out the Group 1 Australia Oaks (2400m) through the 2014 Autumn Carnival.
Transferred to the care of Hayes and co-trainer Tom Dabernig for her 2015 Spring Carnival campaign, the Ekraar mare ran sixth in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) first-up before running a close second to Fawkner in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).
While unable to figure in her next two starts, Rising Romance stormed home to finish a close second in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on October 31st and re-assured her legitimacy as a 2015 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) contestant at Sha Tin on December 13th.
Included amongst a talented list of 2015 Zipping Classic nominations on Monday, Hayes told AAP he believes a final Australian appearance a Sandown will figure as ideal with a view towards the 2015 Hong Kong Cup.
“I’ll have a chat with the owners on whether they want to run her and then come back in distance in Hong Kong,” Hayes said.
“She ran so well on the back-up from the Caulfield Cup to the Mackinnon and she’ll have a month back to the big race over there.”
Running a close second in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) most notably during a standout 2014 Spring Carnival preparation, Rising Romance returned to racing for success in an Ellerslie minor over 1500m in her final preparation for Logan at the beginning of the year; progressing to second in the Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m).
The 2015 Zipping Classic final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
