2015 Zipping Classic Could Include Sertorius

November 10th, 2015

Jamie Edwards has included stable star Sertorius in nominations for two black type races at Sandown on Saturday, but has revealed he is now leaning towards saddling the gelding in the featured Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) following a sharp piece of work on Tuesday morning.

Sertorius has been a strong and consistent performer for Edwards through an impressive 42 start career to date; posting ten wins and a further fourteen minors since first appearing competitively in 2010.

Unable to make much of an impression in his first two starts upon resuming this time, the classy son of Galileo ran on for a credible sixth in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on October 10th; unable to overcome early over racing when ninth in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) before a credible performance for 12th when luckless in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) last weekend.

Having underlined the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) as the obvious race for the eight-year-old this weekend, Edwards told RSN the horse’s work this morning suggests he is primed for a big performance in the feature race; the 2015 Zipping Classic.

“I’ve just worked him now and his work was very sharp. Almost to the point where ill speak to the owners today and we might even go to the Zipping with him,” Edwards said.

“The Sandown Cup is the obvious race because he ran over two mile last week so you’d think he’d improve and ridden forward he’ll run a tough two mile.

“He’s won a Zipping before and that was his final gallop going into the Zipping you’d be pretty happy.”

Edwards concedes Sertorius is arguably at his best over two miles and may still elect to take a position in the Sandown Cup field on Saturday.

“The horse went super but he was always going to – he went into the race just in such good condition,” Edwards said.

“He bounced and he was going to be third or fourth but then he kept getting shuffled back to being about 16th past the post the first time.

“His run in the Sydney Cup was very good and still looking back on it now I made a mistake by running him in the Chairman’s – I should never have done that but he still ran third.

“Any luck at all he finishes in the first few in the Melbourne Cup.”

The 2015 Zipping Classic field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
